Two Poetry Readings in May

Louise will be doing two poetry readings in May -- on Tuesday, May 14, at the Sewell Mill LIbrary in Marietta and on Thursday, May 16, at Charis Books in Decatur.  These will be her last readings in the Atlanta area, as she is relocating.
The reading at Charis Books will be especially historic -- Louise will co-feature with Alice Lovelace, with whom she did her first poetry readings in 1981, 38 years ago. They will be the featured poets at Charis's inaugural Open Mic at its new home at Agnes Scott College, where it is the official bookstore partner of Agnes Scott.  Charis is the South's oldest independent feminist bookstore -- celebrating radical and independent voices since 1974.
Alice Lovelace is the grandmother of Atlanta performance poetry, with a powerful performance voice and presence not to be missed !  Louise and Alice first collaborated in a dance/poetry event titled Women at Work at the Atlanta Women's Art Collective in 1981.
Louise will share the stage in Marietta with Elly Bookman and Andrea Jurjevic.  Andrea, a native of Croatia, teaches at Georgia State, and Elly is a young poet who has had poems published in The New Yorker.

This book is a manifesto on the wisdom, strength, needs and desires of older women – the rising demographic in our country.  It is also a testament to women of the previous generation, “who have brought us safe this far.”  The poems are inspired by working the earth in Decatur, Georgia; a love of the Southern Appalachians; the current political situation; the experience of writing in Italian; and the status of older women in relationship to men.  Included also are two short prose pieces – a life story in fable format and a summary of Runyon’s work as a dancer/choreographer.  The book affirms that older women will not go gently into this goodnight, the last phase of our lives.  Louise Morgan Runyon is a dancer/choreographer, political activist, urban farmer, student of Italian, and former steelworker as well as poet.
